Is there more than one way to speak the truth? Not according to Proverbs 12:17.
He who speaks the truth declares what is right, but a false witness speaks deceit.
What is left out of this verse is “in the eyes of God” on the tail end. Many people today think they are speaking truth when they speak, regardless of what they say. But that is not what this verse means. Speaking the truth always involves declaring righteousness. Of course, telling others what is right also entails demonstrating it, and that’s where many would-be prophets go wrong. They declare what they believe to be right but often fail to demonstrate what is right to match their words.
By contrast, a false witness is deceitful. It has intention of speaking truth or doing what is right. Often, false witnesses speak half-truths and partial truths, which is how they are able to deceive many.
Are you a truth speaker? Are you willing to put your chin on the line for the gospel? Living it is the best way to speak it.
