Microaggressions, Emotional Health and Racial Justice.
That's what I talked about at Church this week. What about you?
Every week around the world, people make decisions out of curiosity, conviction, or culture about faith. We show up at a church, watch a video, jump on a zoom call, try to pray, read books etc. I believe that these practices – individual and communal – shape us profoundly especially if we do them consistently. I went to church on Sunday and got to hear the culmination of a sermon series on Resistance and Reconciliation from pastor, author and friend
at New Life Fellowship Church.I had journeyed back to Elmhurst to pour out and admittedly, did not feel full. It has been a difficult week of fundraising for work on political discipleship with InterVarsity USA. I was stressed trying to own my feelings and adjust my expectations.
If you would like to give to support that work, click here! Check out a 15-minute video update to learn more. I need 68 people to give $250 by midnight!
I was invited alongside an amazing therapist and counselor, Victoria Chiu to teach a workshop called, Microaggressions and Emotionally Healthy Discipleship. It was a powerful time where I felt affirmed, understood, seen and encouraged by the preaching, teaching and worship. What also stood out to me is that not everyone is going to experience this. And whatever content or community we engage with around faith, there needs to be a space to process it.
Now, admittedly, my capacity is limited but for season I’d love to hear what content, contexts and communities are impacting you.
What was the core message you heard on Sunday – drop it in the comments!
What was a video that you watched this past week that got you thinking – put it in the chat!
I believe that we are all called to love God, our neighbors and ourselves – and we were never meant to do that alone.
Let me know what you think! I look forward to the conversation and comments because our screens make us into lonely consumers but God made us to be a vibrant community.
In Christ and for His Glory,
jonathan
